Spicebush Lindera benzoin
Family: Lauraceae (Laurel)
Branching: Alternate
This is a southern shrub that is at its northern limit in southern
Ontario. In the summer its smooth leaves of varying size stand
out, and in the winter there is usually a space between a lateral bud
and the leaf scar beneath. Often there are multiple lateral buds
(flower buds) per
leaf scar. The end buds as well can be clustered, similar to
cherries or oaks. The plant is very fragrant, though this is
greatly
subdued in the winter. The branches typically are greenish in
colour.
