Beaked Hazelnut Corylus cornuta
Family: Betulaceae (Birch)

This is a fairly common shrub in Ontario and is quite
distinctive in the winter by both its buds and bark.
It usually grows to about shoulder height. There are
actually two main species, Beaked and American Hazelnut. As a member of the birch family, hazelnuts have winter catkins as
well.
