Chinquapin Oak Quercus muehlenbergii
Family: Fagaceae (Beech)
Branching: Alternate
Other names: Chinkapin Oak
This is not a common tree in Ontario. Its most distinctive
feature are its leaves, which can often be found on the ground, or
still attached to the tree through the winter. They resemble
Chestnut leaves and have sharply pointed lobes (the lobes are not
bristle-tipped, though, as this is a member of the White Oak group).
I have not seen it very many times and only have a couple
pictures here.
